"L'avenir de Rennes -The Future of Rennes"
Welcome to Rennes, the capital of Bretagne, the northwest region of France--home to the Normandy Coast, Mont St. Michel, unbelievable seafood, and the crepe. Yes, for those of you who are fans of "Talladega Nights", crepes are those really thin pancakes!
It's hard to believe, but I haven't had a crepe yet! I was too busy when I arrived in my new home to check out any of the "creperies" around town. Instead, I was trick-or-treating with my new teammates in the second week of August on the streets of Dinard, (a costal town about 45 minutes north of Rennes and our team training camp site) asking for candy or anything else of interest that can be put into a big, industrial-sized garbage bag. Halloween came around early in France this year.
Can you imagine? Initiation? Here I am, 28, thinking I'm a seasoned vet. Yet the very next day after the trick-or treat escapade, I'm running around town like a crazy person giving back the same candy that we worked so hard to beg for--to any random passers by who will accept candy from me, a 6'2" blonde donning face paint, a side ponytail, and a plastic garbage bag (totally hot look, by the way--check out the pic!)
With a new team comes a new set of rules. Although I'm not the oldest, not yet anyway (WOO HOO!), I prefer the word experienced. With the exception of 3 players, my teammates are all under 20. This season my biggest challenge to set the stage as a leader and to convince my teammates to step up and follow my example to victory.
The new generation is up and coming (and coming to trick or treat at a location near you!), but not without a little help from the vets. So raise your glasses--vintage 1990 Bordeaux, anyone? Here is to the 2008-2009 season, and here's to l'avenir! GO RENNES!
